Senior Robotic Metrology Specialist

Path Robotics · Columbus, Ohio

Build the Path Forward

At Path Robotics, we’re attacking a trillion dollar opportunity - doing things that have never been done before to support an industry hurting from a lack of skilled labor. Large, difficult problems are what Path tackles every day and our people are our greatest asset to get that job done. Our intelligent, hardworking team of people do the impossible every single day, yet remain incredibly kind, humble, and always ready to support one another.

The Senior Metrology Tech owns dimensional calibration and alignment of Path's robotic welding systems from installation through final validation. Working with FARO Vantage laser trackers, PolyWorks, and RoboDK, this role levels and aligns rails and robots, runs base and TCP calibration on Yaskawa hardware, and verifies every system meets tolerance before handoff. It's a field-forward position (60–70% travel) requiring deep laser tracker expertise, strong data analysis and documentation discipline, and the ability to troubleshoot hardware and software issues independently at customer sites.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead end-to-end dimensional calibration of robotic welding cells — rails, tracks, positioners, and robot arms — using a FARO laser tracker.
  • Set up and operate FARO Vantage laser trackers per company SOPs.
  • Level RTU/PTU rails and align positioners to tolerance in PolyWorks, directing the mechanical adjustments.
  • Calibrate robot arms in RoboDK on Yaskawa hardware via teach pendant.
  • Review results against spec; resolve or escalate out-of-tolerance findings.
  • Export, document, and hand off validated calibration packages using standard file conventions.
  • Troubleshoot tracker, software, and pendant issues on-site.
  • Travel to customer sites for installation, alignment, and recalibration (60–70%).

Who You Are

  • Willingness to accommodate 60%-70% travel and work non-standard hours as needed to support critical on-site installation schedules.
  • Demonstrated background in metrology spanning over five years, specifically utilizing FARO Vantage or ION laser trackers within field or industrial settings.
  • Advanced mastery of PolyWorks, including coordinate system development, GD&T application, device interfacing, and the creation of automated macros and reports.
  • Functional understanding of robotic calibration sequences, with a strong preference for candidates experienced in RoboDK software integration.
  • Proficiency in Yaskawa/Motoman teach pendant operations and a commitment to safety protocols when working inside active robotic workcells.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of dimensional tolerances and measurement uncertainty, with the analytical skill to validate data integrity in real-time.
  • Commitment to rigorous documentation standards, maintaining organized data structures and standardized reporting across multiple system serial numbers.
  • Practical mechanical skills, including tripod rigging, lag bolt installation, and monitoring structural movement during the fastening process.
  • Proven expertise in the commissioning of sophisticated robotic workcells, including large-scale gantry deployments, rail-based transport units, and dual-sided or multi-zone system architectures.
  • Technical proficiency in Python scripting to drive measurement automation, specifically leveraging PolyWorks macros and the RoboDK API for enhanced workflow efficiency.
  • Possession of formal industry credentials, such as FARO certification, CMS accreditation, or advanced coursework specializing in laser tracker operation.
  • Substantial background within heavy industrial fabrication, robotic welding, or complex automation integration environments.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work on the shop floor for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull materials and equipment up to 50 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Frequent use of hands for handling tools, equipment, and materials
  • Ability to safely operate or be around welding and machining equipment, including exposure to:
  • Heat, sparks, and fumes associated with welding
  • Noise from fabrication and machining operations
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, welding helmet, hearing protection, and steel-toe footwear
  • May require occasional extended hours to support urgent builds, customer requests, or critical business needs
